We provide one-hour comprehensive eye examinations and a range of eye care services in a friendly and professional environment.

Regular eye examinations

Regular eye examinations are essential to achieving clear and comfortable vision and good ocular health. Vision screenings performed by a school nurse, your employer or the traffic department are not the same as a comprehensive eye exam.

Optometrists check for eye disorders and diseases that may have no early symptoms, but should nevertheless be treated as soon as possible to avoid vision loss.

During a routine eye examination, we will perform tests like retinoscopy, slit lamp examination, fundus lens ophthalmoscopy, refraction (non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic with pupil dilation where necessary), binocular evaluations, glaucoma screening with contact tonometry, OCT and visual fields, and corneal topography when indicated.

Corneal topography

Using a corneal topographer, it is possible to measure the front surface of the eye, called the cornea, with extreme accuracy and detail. During eye examinations, corneal topography is particularly useful to analyse the cornea for irregularities due to astigmatism, corneal disease, allergies and contact lens wear.

OCT

Optical coherence tomography is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your eye.  With the OCT, it is possible to quickly diagnose retinal diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, epiretinal membranes, and diabetic retinopathy.

The OCT is also very useful when fitting scleral contact lenses and allows us to fit the lenses with micro-millimeter accuracy.

Contact lenses examinations

Charl Laäs Optometrists has a specific interest in contact lenses. From standard soft contact lenses to more advanced soft, rigid and scleral contact lens fits speciality procedures such as orthokeratology, keratoconus, post refractive surgery and the rehabilitation of the traumatised and irregular cornea.

Technology is continually expanding the range of contact lenses and patients that may previously not have been able to wear contact lenses are now being catered for.

We make use of the revolutionary new EyeSpace contact lens design software.  Allowing our optometrists to custom design each and every rigid contact lens we fit.

New designs and materials such as bifocal/progressive lenses, silicone extended wear soft lenses, advanced orthokeratology and scleral lenses are now providing more comfortable vision with more oxygen transmission to the eye than older generation lenses.

The combination of the new lens design techniques, new materials, and modern CNC lathe manufacturing results in many more people having longer hours of hassle free wear with less red eye problems associated with contact lens wear.

Community care and affordability

Please note that we have subsidised options for disadvantaged people, whereby we offer packages of complete spectacle frames, prescription lenses and comprehensive eye examinations at a very affordable tariff.
